JUDGE CLINTON E. DEVEAUX
In
August 2004, Judge Clinton E. Deveaux was appointed Presiding Judge of
the Atlanta Community Court Division by Chief Judge Deborah Greene of the Atlanta Municipal Court. Judge
Deveaux was appointed to the Atlanta Municipal Court on January 20, 1981, by Mayor Maynard Jackson and re-elected
to the court in 1985 and each Atlanta election
since.
The Atlanta Municipal Court has criminal
jurisdiction and hears a high volume of domestic violence,
substance abuse, and first offender cases. From
May 1994 until January 2003, Judge Deveaux's calendar
contained domestic and family violence cases exclusively. The Atlanta Municipal Court created this
specialized calendar in response to a major revision of Georgia's domestic
violence law.
To more effectively handle these
cases, Judge Deveaux studied how families function, how relationships
affect individual behavior and the ways in which criminal
behavior reflects family dysfunction. Judge
Deveaux developed a Court Family Therapy referral Program. In
the program, experienced family therapists help defendants
change their behavior by helping them understand the legal
requirements of accountability and consequence.
Judge Deveaux serves on the visiting
faculty of the Family Institute of New Jersey and is a Trustee
of the National Judicial College. He has made presentations and taught
at: The National Judicial College from 1995
through 2000; The Georgia Institute for Continuing Judicial
Education each year since 2001; The 1993, 1994 and 1995 American
Bar Association annual meetings in New York, new Orleans
and Chicago; the 1989 through 1994 National Conferences of
the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy
Education; The National Adolescent Drug Abuse and Mental
Health Treatment Conference; The Eastern States Conference
of the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry; The Culture,
Class, Race and Gender Conference of the Family Institute
of New Jersey; The Texas Association for Marriage and Family
Therapy and the South Carolina Cross-Cultural Mental Health
Conference.
Judge Deveaux is a former public
member of the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and
Family Therapy Education. He
is active in the National Conference of Special Court Judges
of the American Bar Association. He is immediate past Chair of the Board
of Advisors of Columbia University's National Center for Children
in Poverty and is an active participant in the Judicial Summit
of the Black Community Crusade for Children. Judge
Deveaux is a husband, father and grandfather.
