THE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

The community service program originated
under the Municipal Court Probation Department in 1995 as a pilot
project. The program consisted of neighborhood clean-ups which
originated in the 4th Ward District of the city of Atlanta. Participants
in the program consisted mainly of ten to twelve probationers
under the supervision of Judge William F. Riley and Probation
Officer Anita Johnson.
Garrett Allen directs the Community Service Program. The community
service program has been expanded to seven days a week for those
persons needing community service hours.This
service is offered to probationers coming through both Community Court and Municipal Court.
Services are offered to other courts throughout the region including,
City Court of Atlanta, Traffic Court, Fulton State Court, Fulton
Superior Drug Court, and other courts throughout the region.
Through community service, the offender gives something back
to the community as an alternative to incarceration.
The goals of the Community Service Program
are to:
- provide appropriate alternative sentencing
- avoid the high cost of incarceration
- provide an educational tool which allows offenders to derive
a positive experience through service to the community
- reconnect offenders with local residents through positive
work projects.
