GEORGIA COMMISSION ON INTERPRETERS ADMINISTRATIVE POLICIES
- A $25 fee will be assessed for all returned checks.
- If you would like to meet with a staff member please call and schedule an appointment before visiting. Making an appointment will ensure that a staff member is available to assist you during your visit.
- Our office does not accept cash payments. Please submit payments by personal/company check or by money order.
- Please notify our office if you have a change in address, name, or other personal information. This will ensure that you continue to receive important updates on skill-building course, annual renewals, etc. All changes to interpreter contact information need to be submitted to our office in writing by letter or email. Please allow 4-6 weeks for changes to be reflected on our website.
- Please note that orientation workshops and oral proficiency interviews taken through other agencies such as the Department of Human Resources and ALTA do not meet our licensing requirements. Individuals who wish to be licensed by the Georgia Commission on Interpreters must complete all requirements through the approved providers. Information on Commission sponsored activities can be found on the Schedule of Activities posted on our website at www.georgiacourts.org/agencies/interpreters
- Once the Orientation Workshop is completed, an applicant has two years to complete the remaining requirements to become registered or certified. If he/she fails to complete the program requirements within the allotted time frame, he/she will have to retake the English written exam and all subsequent requirements.
- As of January 2007 all current Registered Interpreters have until January 2009 to move from Registered to Certified status if there is an Oral Certification Exam offered in that language. An Oral Certification Exam exists for the following languages: Arabic, Cantonese, French, Haitian-Creole, Hmong, Korean, Laotian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese. If your language is not listed this rule does not apply to you. For languages that have an Oral Certification Exam, obtaining or maintaining registered status is no longer available.
- Applicants must pass all three portions of the Oral Certification Exam in one setting.
- Any interpreter who allows his/her license to become inactive for a period of one year or more will be taken off of our registry and will have to repeat the program requirements before being licensed again.
- An individual must complete the orientation workshop before he/she can apply for the English written exam. The written exam is scheduled on the third day of all workshops. For example: if the workshop is scheduled on January 7th and 8th, then the written exam is scheduled on January 9th. You have the option of taking the test on any day the written exam is scheduled after you complete the 16 hour orientation; however, you must meet all requirements to become licensed within two years from the day you attended orientation. If you do not pass the written exam then you must reschedule to retake the test at a cost of $50.00. Individuals must take and pass (and receive grades) for the English written exam before applying for the Oral Certification Exam.
- All registration forms/fees must be received by close of business on the registration deadline date. Postmarks are not accepted. Fees are refundable for cancellations received in writing prior to the respective event registrations deadline. All fees are non-refundable and non-transferable once the registration deadline expires for the particular program event.
- Our office does not accept faxed applications or renewal forms. All candidates must mail the application along with check or money order into our office. Applications and payments must be received by 5:00 p.m. on the day of the deadline for application. All deadlines are posted on our Schedule of Activities.
- All interpreters are required to renew their licenses on an annual basis. Renewals are due by 5:00 p.m. on October 1st each year. The cost of renewal is $100. The late fee schedule is as follows:
