Sign Language InterpretersPrior to the passing of HB 859 during the 2001-2002 General Assembly, a listing of intermediary and qualified sign language interpreters for the hearing impaired was maintained by the Georgia Department of Human Resources. The Access and Fairness in the Courts Committee serves as a resource to Georgia courts by providing referral services for qualified legal-trained sign language interpreters. All qualified interpreters are certified through the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or approved by the Georgia Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Intermediary interpreters include any person who is able to assist in providing an accurate interpretation between spoken English and sign language. For additional information on qualified and intermediary sign language interpreters, or if you are interested in interpreting opportunities with the minimum specified credentials, please contact Silvia A. Gaines at (404) 463-3927 or the Administrative Office of the Courts at (404) 656-5171. A listing of recommended sign language interpreting agencies and experienced freelance interpreters is available below. Sign Language Interpreting Firms
