How do I become a certified court reporter in Georgia?
You can become a court reporter by passing the certification exam. If you are currently working in another state or have passed national exams such as the RPR or CVR you may qualify for reciprocity.

How often is the exam offered?
The Board of Court Reporting holds the certification exam yearly in the fall and spring.

What is on the exam?
The exam consists of a two-hour 200-question written test which includes grammar, Board rules and regulations, and medical and legal terminology. During the dictation portion of the exam, you will takedown two five-minute sections of a Literary @ 160 wpm, a Jury Charge @ 180 wpm and a Question & Answer @ 200 wpm. The applicant will hand in only one transcript for each dictation category and must pass each take with 96% accuracy.

How can I sign up to take the exam and what qualifications do I need?

You may call the office to be put on our mailing list. You will receive your testing information packet in the mail approximately one month prior to the exam. Generally, applicants need to be at least 18 and have graduated from high school or the equivalent (GED).

How do I obtain an emergency judicial permit?
You can obtain an emergency judicial permit for one year by having a judge sponsor you. Please call our office so staff can send you the correct forms.

What schools offer court reporter training?
Depending on which method you wish to purse, you can call NVRA (voice writers) @ 601-582-4345 or the NCRA @ 703-556-6272. These organizations can assist you with training institutions in the state of Georgia.

Who should I contact to get a new seal?

How many court reporters are certified in Georgia?
Generally, around 1100-1200 are certified to practice in the state.

Does the Board of Court Reporting recommend reporters?
We do not refer court reporters for jobs.

How do I file a complaint against a court reporter?
You will need Article 11 of the rules and regulations. These forms are online and are ready to download. If you are unable to download the forms please call our office and we will mail to you the correct forms.

If I do court reporting work in Georgia but live in another state do I need to be certified?
Yes, you do. If you do any court reporting in Georgia regardless of whether it is part-time you need to be certified.

Where can I find out about continuing education classes?
Go to the ICJE Court Reporters website for a list of preapproved classes and other information about continuing education.  The “Classes and Seminars” list is frequently updated as new classes are approved throughout the year.  Website:  www.uga.edu/icje (click “Court Reporters”)
